Council Bluffs man arrested after two-hour armed standoff on Harrison Street

A 42-year-old man was taken into custody Sunday after a two-hour standoff at a Council Bluffs apartment, where he claimed to be armed and refused to leave.

Jonathon Chestnut, 42, was arrested on multiple charges early Sunday morning following a two-hour standoff inside a Council Bluffs apartment on the 300 block of Harrison Street, wowt.com reports.

Officers were dispatched just before 6 a.m. in response to a reported restraining order violation. A woman at the scene told police that Chestnut was inside her apartment. Chestnut then informed officers he was armed with a gun and refused to come out.

The Council Bluffs Police Department's Emergency Services Team (EST) and negotiators were called in to assist. After approximately two hours of negotiations produced no results, EST entered the apartment with the help of a CBPD K-9 unit. Chestnut was taken into custody shortly after.

He was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Chestnut faces charges of interference with official acts while displaying a weapon, violation of a no contact/protection order, and stalking.

Harrison Street in the 300 block was closed for roughly three hours during the incident.
