David Coursey, 36, killed in Sycamore police shooting after charging officers with knife

A man died after Sycamore police opened fire on Saturday evening near Foxpointe Drive. The DeKalb County Coroner identified him as David Coursey, 36.

According to abc7chicago.com, Sycamore police responded at around 8 p.m. on Saturday to a report of suspicious activity near Foxpointe Drive and Constance Lane.

A caller reported that a man had approached their vehicle while holding an object. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect was found to be carrying a knife.

The man charged at the officers, at which point shots were fired by police, officials said. Cortland fire crews transported the suspect to Northwestern Kishwaukee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The DeKalb County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as David Coursey, 36, of Sycamore.

Officers involved in the shooting were taken to hospital for evaluation and subsequently released. Illinois State Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
