A four-year-old child was shot dead and an adult wounded after gunfire hit several homes in a northwest Charlotte residential area in the early hours of Sunday morning, wbtv.com reports.

Officers from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a 911 call at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, 20 September, on Grassy Patch Lane, following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. On arrival, they found multiple homes had been struck by gunfire.

Two gunshot victims were discovered at the scene. The child, identified as Caleb Flax, aged 4, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at 7:18 a.m.

The second victim, an adult whose identity has not been released, was also taken to hospital and treated for injuries described as non-life threatening.

Police confirmed that Flax's family had been notified of his death. No suspects were in custody at the time of reporting.
