At approximately 3:30 p.m. on 16 September, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were deployed near the intersection of North Graham Street and Atando Avenue. The closure extended from Dogwood Avenue to Atando Avenue, though the road has since reopened.

According to a police spokesperson, officers witnessed a violent crime described as "dangerous to life" and attempted to intervene. One of the vehicles involved fled the scene, prompting a chase that crossed from Mecklenburg County into Gaston and Cleveland counties along I-85 before ending in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
