Silver Spring jury convicts Jeriel Martin in fatal 2024 shooting of Jamar Jenifer
A jury in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County found Jeriel Martin, 35, of Silver Spring, guilty of second-degree murder and use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime, according to montgomerycountymd.gov. The verdict, delivered on September 11, 2026, concerns the death of 34-year-old Jamar Jenifer.
Martin faces a maximum of 60 years in prison. A sentencing hearing before Judge J. Bradford McCullough has been scheduled for December 15, 2026.
On the morning of September 2, 2024, Montgomery County Police responded to a report of a man lying in a pool of blood in an alley near the 8000 block of 13th Street in Silver Spring. Jenifer had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A surveillance camera outside the Galaxy Apartments recorded the incident. The footage shows a brief exchange of words between Jenifer and Martin. Martin then rose, walked toward Jenifer, drew a handgun, and fired four times. He subsequently entered the apartment building where he resided. Jenifer was unarmed. The two men were known to each other; investigators have not established a motive.
At the time of the shooting, Martin was on probation following a prior incarceration for gun possession. In a recorded conversation played for the jury, Martin compared killing Jenifer to squashing a bug, stepping on an ant, or swatting a fly.
"This defendant displayed a stunning lack of remorse and outlook on the ability to take a life," State's Attorney John McCarthy said in a statement. "Jamar Jenifer was a son, father, and brother. We will continue to seek justice for Mr. Jenifer and his family at sentencing."
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorneys Mary Herdman and Ian Dombroski.
