A suspect is dead and three San Diego Police Department officers were hospitalised with burns following an officer-involved shooting near El Cajon Boulevard and Oregon Street in North Park on Wednesday morning, fox5sandiego.com reports.

Officers were dispatched to the area shortly after 9 a.m. in response to a disturbance of peace call. On arrival, they found the suspect breaking vehicle windows and behaving violently. A foot pursuit followed when police moved to confront him.

The suspect entered an adult emporium carrying a torch and flammable liquid, according to SDPD officials. He used the torch to burn police K-9 Ryder, who sustained severe burns to his face. Officers deployed bean bag rounds in an attempt to subdue the suspect, but he continued trying to set the building alight.

Officers then fired their weapons. The suspect was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Ryder was treated at a veterinary hospital and released within hours of the incident. A veterinarian confirmed the dog is expected to make a full recovery. The three officers involved were treated for burns sustained during the confrontation; their conditions were not specified beyond that they received medical care.

SDPD officials have not released the identity of the suspect pending next-of-kin notification.
