Woman threatens Metro-North passengers at Grand Central, 60 evacuated

A woman was arrested after threatening passengers on a Metro-North train near Grand Central Terminal. Around 60 riders were evacuated and service was suspended briefly.

A woman was taken into custody at Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday morning after allegedly threatening other passengers aboard a Metro-North train, nbcnewyork.com reports.

MTA police responded at around 8:30 a.m. to an incident involving the 7:12 a.m. service from New Canaan bound for Manhattan. As the train neared Track 110 on Grand Central's lower level, the woman began experiencing what MTA police described as an "emotional crisis."

A fellow passenger told officers that the woman declared, "This will be your last day on Earth." Another rider on board immediately pulled the emergency cord, bringing the train to a stop roughly 100 yards short of the platform.

Approximately 60 passengers disembarked at that point. Metro-North subsequently de-energised the third rail and suspended all train service to Grand Central's lower level. Officers and crew members escorted those who had stepped onto the tracks to safety on the platform.

Power was restored approximately 20 minutes after the incident began, once all passengers had cleared the tracks, according to the MTA. The remaining passengers still on board were then guided to the platform.

The woman was identified as Hannah Santero, 33, from Elmhurst. She was charged with making a terroristic threat and a threat of mass harm. Attorney information for Santero was not immediately available.

No weapons were recovered at the scene, and no injuries were reported.

Services on the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines were delayed as a result of the disruption but were running on or close to schedule by midday.
