A suspect is dead and three San Diego Police Department officers were treated for burns following an officer-involved shooting in the North Park neighbourhood Wednesday morning, 10news.com reports.

Officers were dispatched to the area near El Cajon Boulevard and Oregon Street shortly after 9 a.m. in response to a disturbance of peace call. Upon arrival, they found the suspect breaking vehicle windows and behaving violently.

A foot pursuit began after officers spotted the suspect, who was carrying a torch and flammable liquid into an adult emporium. The suspect used the torch to burn a police K-9, identified as Ryder, before officers deployed bean bag rounds in an attempt to subdue him.

When the suspect continued trying to set the building alight, officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead just before noon.

SDPD confirmed all three officers involved were treated for burns sustained during the incident. K-9 Ryder suffered severe burns to his face but was discharged from a veterinary hospital within hours. A veterinarian said Ryder is expected to make a full recovery.
