A federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man on Sunday in North Austin, Texas, city officials confirmed. The victim was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center and described as in serious but stable condition, according to cnn.com.

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services responded just before 1 p.m. to a reported shooting at the 8000 block of Anderson Square, EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said at a Sunday afternoon news conference. Luckritz identified one adult male as having sustained a gunshot wound.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson confirmed that local police were not involved in the shooting itself, but that investigators were present at the scene and conducting traffic control in the surrounding area. Police Chief Lisa Davis said the incident may have involved a foot chase with the ICE agent prior to the shooting.

Watson raised doubts about the agency's ability to conduct an impartial inquiry. He said the Texas Rangers and Austin Police would both take part in the investigation. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.

CNN affiliate KVUE, which was filming in the area after the incident, showed a damaged blue sedan near Anderson Square and US Route 183.

Democratic Congressman Greg Casar, who represents Austin, called for an independent investigation into the shooting via a social media post. The investigation remains ongoing.
