Louisiana Couple Charged After Leaving Toddler Unattended Following THC Gummy Ingestion

A Louisiana couple knew their 4-year-old son had swallowed a THC gummy on Sept. 13 — and chose to attend a college football game instead of seeking medical attention, according to Law & Crime.

Mary Cormier, 36, and David Butt, 34, of Scott, Louisiana, left the child in the care of another juvenile before heading to LSU's Sept. 12 game against Louisiana Tech in Baton Rouge, roughly an hour from their home, the Scott Police Department reported via Acadiana News First. The couple was away for approximately eight hours.

When Cormier and Butt returned home, they found the boy breathing but unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

Police have not released further details on the child's current condition or whether he remained in the ICU as of Wednesday. Authorities have also not clarified how the child accessed the THC gummy or to whom it belonged.

Both Cormier and Butt were charged with second-degree cruelty to juveniles, child desertion, and contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. Jail records indicate both have since posted bond and been released from custody.

The identity of the juvenile left in charge of the 4-year-old has not been disclosed. The investigation remains ongoing.
