A 35-year-old man from El Salvador has been arraigned in Hempstead after allegedly killing a man with a machete behind a strip mall in Uniondale, Long Island.

A 35-year-old man has been arraigned in Hempstead, Long Island, after prosecutors allege he fatally struck another man with a machete behind a strip mall in Uniondale, abc7ny.com reports.

Jorge Alexander Huezo Villatoro is accused of attacking 40-year-old Tadeo Alvarado-Chavez, striking him repeatedly on the head and body with a machete and continuing the assault after the victim had already collapsed to the ground. Prosecutors said Alvarado-Chavez was left in a pool of blood.

According to police, the incident began at Frontera Bar in Uniondale at around 2 a.m. on Monday. Alvarado-Chavez was punched during an altercation inside the bar, then left the premises and returned approximately two hours later carrying a machete of his own.

A bystander and Villatoro disarmed him, police said. Investigators allege Villatoro then obtained a second machete, followed the victim to the rear of a nearby strip mall and carried out the fatal attack there.

Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Daniel Steller described the scene in stark terms. "It was a horrific attack. The individual was unarmed. He was walking away. He was trying to get away when Mr. Villatoro… it was a barbaric assault which unfortunately led to his death," Steller said.

Prosecutors noted that Villatoro, a native of El Salvador, refused to provide information to police following his arrest. He was remanded and entered a plea of not guilty.

If convicted on the charges against him, Villatoro faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
