A man was fatally shot by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Friday afternoon in the Lincoln Heights neighbourhood, just north of Uptown Charlotte, wbtv.com reports.

At approximately 2:40 p.m. on Friday, 18 September, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance near the intersection of Lasalle Street and Newland Road. Upon arrival, Chief Estella Patterson said, officers observed a large group of people nearby who were unrelated to the original call and appeared to be engaged in a "criminal transaction." The nature of that transaction was not immediately established.

When one individual in the group spotted the officers, he began walking away. Patterson said officers issued multiple commands to stop, but the man fled on foot. Officers gave chase, and Patterson said the man then produced a firearm. Police determined there was an imminent deadly threat, and one officer discharged their weapon.

Medic transported the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers sustained injuries. A weapon was recovered at the scene, according to Patterson.

The identity of the deceased had not been released at the time of publication.
