Man arrested over pistol-whipping and shooting in SE Portland's Montavilla area

Suspect charged with assault after Montavilla shooting

Portland police have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with a shooting and pistol-whipping in the Montavilla neighbourhood, according to portland.gov.

On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, at around 6:30 p.m., officers from the Portland Police Bureau's East Precinct responded to a reported injury shooting in the 1400 block of Northeast 81st Avenue. At the scene, they found an adult male who had been pistol-whipped and shot. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

PPB's Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) opened an investigation and identified Devin M. Stevens, of St. Helens, as the suspect, along with a vehicle linked to the incident.

In the days that followed, PPB's Focused Intervention Team (FIT) located Stevens, stopped him, and seized his vehicle and mobile phones as evidence, allowing investigators to establish further probable cause.

On Friday, 28 August 2026, officers arrested Stevens and transported him to the Multnomah County Detention Center. He was lodged on charges of Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree (three counts), and Unlawful Use of a Weapon (three counts).
