A 74-year-old Maryland man has been charged with felony manslaughter after fatally shooting a Delaware woman he reportedly mistook for a deer, wjla.com reports.

The shooting occurred on Friday evening in an open field near South Old State Road, north of East Robbins Road, in Ellendale, Sussex County — approximately 30 miles south of Dover, Delaware.

Delaware State Police (DSP) said the victim, a 39-year-old resident of Georgetown, Del., was walking through the field with a man and two children when Walter Moorhead, of Salisbury, Maryland, opened fire from a ground blind. Moorhead believed he had spotted a deer and discharged his rifle.

Officers were called to the scene at around 7:40 p.m. The woman was treated on site before being transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released her name.

Moorhead was taken into custody at the scene. He was subsequently booked on one count of felony manslaughter, three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, and a felony weapons charge. He was released after posting a $43,000 bond.
