A South Bend police officer and a woman were injured in a shooting near Notre Dame's campus on Saturday evening, cbsnews.com reports. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at Eddy Street Commons in South Bend, Indiana.

South Bend police were initially notified by Notre Dame police of a man with a firearm who had reportedly been pointing it at people. Officers located the suspect on the south end of Eddy Street Commons, though he was not found to be armed at the time of the encounter.

While officers were working the scene, a single gunshot was heard near the intersection of Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard. Officers found a woman at that location with a gunshot wound to her leg. The injury was described as non-life-threatening, and she was transported to hospital for treatment.

A South Bend police officer sustained an injury from a ricochet caused by the gunfire. The officer was treated on-scene and the injury was also non-life-threatening.

South Bend officers coordinated with both the Notre Dame Police Department and the St. Joseph County Police Department to secure the area around Eddy Street Commons and the Notre Dame campus.
