Ohio Teen Shoots and Kills Older Brother to Protect Mother, Charged with Murder

Ohio Teen Fatally Shoots Brother During Alleged Attack on Mother, Faces Murder Charge

An 18-year-old from North Olmsted, Ohio, has been charged with murder after fatally shooting his older brother inside the family home, telling police he acted to stop an assault on their mother. Law & Crime reports that Ameen Farraj was taken into custody following the death of his 22-year-old brother, Abdulla Farraj.

Police and firefighters responded to the 5100 block of Lucydale Avenue at 2:41 p.m. on Wednesday after a 911 call reported that a man had been shot following an altercation inside the residence. Emergency personnel transported Abdulla Farraj to Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had suffered one gunshot wound to the stomach and another to the chest.

'I Had to Shoot Him'

Two 911 calls recorded in the immediate aftermath shed light on the circumstances. In one, Ameen Farraj told a dispatcher, "I had to shoot him. I had to shoot him." When the dispatcher asked whether he had shot his brother, he confirmed he had, then added, "He was hitting my mom."

Ameen Farraj told the dispatcher that Abdulla was still breathing and lying on his stomach. The dispatcher instructed him to turn his brother over and apply pressure to the wound moments before first responders arrived.

In a separate call, Ameen Farraj's sister told a dispatcher, "My brother hit my mom and he got shot," later adding that Ameen "was protecting me and my mother and my cousin." Approximately five other people were present inside the home when the shooting took place.

Defense Argues Self-Defense and Protection of Others

Ameen Farraj appeared Thursday in Rocky River Municipal Court for his arraignment. Defense attorney Issa Elkhatib argued that his client had no criminal record and posed no threat to the community.

"This is a case strictly of self-defense and defense of others," Elkhatib told the court, according to WEWS. He further contended that the situation could have ended far worse. "This is a case where, had Mr. Farraj not acted quickly, swiftly, and intelligently, we could be talking about a murder of maybe multiple people," he reportedly said.

Elkhatib also told the court that Ameen Farraj's mother had recently been discharged from the ICU following a possible brain bleed and was already battling cancer. In a statement posted to Facebook, the attorney described the shooting as an act of family protection and wrote, "This was NOT an act of murder."

Prior Arrests on Domestic Violence Charges

Authorities had previously arrested Abdulla Farraj multiple times on domestic violence charges dating back to 2023. He also had pending cases involving theft, obstructing official business, and criminal damage, according to Cleveland.com.

The defense has maintained that Abdulla had a documented history of violent and verbally abusive behavior toward family members and that he had attacked their mother before Ameen intervened.

Ameen Farraj is currently held at the North Olmsted Jail on $1 million bond. If released, he would be required to wear a GPS monitor. His next scheduled court appearance had not been immediately confirmed.
