SBI probes fatal police shooting on LaSalle Street in Charlotte

A suspect was shot and killed by a Charlotte officer Saturday after pulling a gun during a foot chase. The North Carolina SBI is investigating.

A man is dead after being shot by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer on Saturday afternoon, spectrumlocalnews.com reports. State investigators are now examining the circumstances of the shooting.

Officers responded to the 1300 block of LaSalle Street at approximately 2:26 p.m. after observing a nearby group apparently involved in a "criminal transaction," according to a CMPD news release. When one man in the group fled on foot, officers gave chase.

During the pursuit, the man drew a firearm, prompting an officer to open fire, police said. Officers administered first aid at the scene, and the man was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken on the case, alongside CMPD's internal affairs department, which is conducting a parallel review.

An autopsy is scheduled for the coming week. "We expect that the objective facts established through the Medical Examiner's examination and the SBI's investigation, when completed, will address some of the lingering questions and unverified reports currently circulating," CMPD said in its statement. The department added that leadership is maintaining close contact with city and community leaders throughout the investigative process.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on paid administrative leave, in line with standard police protocol.
