Three Shot at South LA Senior Living Facility, Suspect in Custody

A gunman opened fire at a South Los Angeles assisted living facility Monday, wounding three employees. One victim is in critical condition; the suspect, also an employee, was arrested on scene.

Shooting at South LA Assisted Living Facility Leaves Three Wounded

Three employees were shot inside a South Los Angeles assisted living facility Monday morning after a coworker opened fire in the lobby, NY Post Metro reports.

LAPD officers arrived at the Progressive Home for the Elderly on the 7000 block of Denver Avenue at approximately 10:50 a.m., responding to calls about gunfire inside the building. Officers were on scene within two minutes of receiving the first calls, police said. A handgun believed to be the shooter's weapon was recovered at the scene.

Early accounts indicate the gunman — identified as an employee of the facility — fired at coworkers after stating, "I'm tired of this." LAPD Capt. Mike Bland confirmed to The Post that all three victims, as well as the suspect, are believed to be employees of the facility.

"The shooting itself is believed to have occurred in the lobby of the building," Bland said. "He was located by responders inside of the building. It was an act of violence inside the facility. Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting."

One victim was hospitalized in critical condition; the other two were listed in stable condition. LAPD described the victims as a Hispanic woman in her 40s, a Black woman in her 60s, and a Black man in his 60s. Their names have not been released. The suspect was described as a Black man in his 60s.

The Progressive Home for the Elderly houses approximately 100 residents and serves low-income seniors. Dorothy Mobley, a caregiver who was inside the building when the shooting erupted, told KTLA she had just entered the facility when she encountered a custodian near the front desk. She fled immediately.

"I was surprised, I never would have expected that," Mobley told the outlet. She described the suspected gunman as someone who had never caused problems at the facility. "He's a nice guy, he don't bother nobody or anything. He's a good guy," she said.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene. Police have not publicly identified him or disclosed a confirmed motive. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
