Saskatchewan youth held on drug and weapons charges after Mackenzie Highway stop

A 17-year-old from Saskatchewan has been arrested near Fort Simpson on suspicion of drug trafficking, cbc.ca reports.

RCMP officers stopped a vehicle on the Mackenzie Highway on Aug. 14, near the Jean Marie River turnoff. The youth was wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant. A search of the vehicle turned up illicit drug residue, weapons, ammunition and drug paraphernalia.

Three weeks later, on Sept. 4, investigators searched a safe that had been seized from the youth at the time of arrest. Inside they found $12,580 in cash, 144 grams of suspected cocaine and additional drug paraphernalia.

The accused now faces drug and weapons possession charges, along with more than a dozen further charges related to previous release and probation conditions. The youth remains in custody while the investigation continues.
