Kingston Police warn of a two-person scam where suspects pose as delivery drivers and customers to steal debit cards and PINs.

Kingston residents targeted in food delivery card-swap scheme

Kingston Police have issued a warning about a food delivery scam in which suspects steal bank cards and PINs from unsuspecting residents, kingstondaily.ca reports.

Several incidents have recently been reported across the Kingston area involving two suspects working in tandem. One poses as a customer who claims their payment card is not working; the other poses as a food delivery driver.

The so-called customer offers the victim cash and asks them to pay for the food using a PIN payment terminal. During the transaction, the victim's bank card is swapped for a different card. The victim then enters their PIN, unknowingly handing suspects access to both the card and the code.

Police say stolen cards have subsequently been used for cash withdrawals, bad cheque deposits and retail purchases.

Residents are advised not to enter their PIN on a terminal for any transaction they did not themselves initiate, and not to use their bank card in exchange for cash.

Anyone who suspects their card has been compromised should contact their financial institution immediately, cancel the card, change their PIN and monitor their account for unauthorised activity.
