Kingston police have issued a public warning about a coordinated fraud scheme in which suspects pose as food delivery workers to steal residents' bank cards and obtain their PINs, thespec.com reports.

According to investigators, the scam involves at least two suspects working in tandem — one impersonating a food delivery driver and another acting as a customer. In several incidents, one of the suspects approached a victim claiming to have trouble paying for a delivery due to a card issue, then handed over cash and asked the victim to tap their own bank card on the delivery driver's payment terminal.

At that point, police say, the victim's card was swapped for a different card without their knowledge. The stolen card was subsequently used to make cash withdrawals, deposit fraudulent cheques, and carry out retail purchases.

Kingston police are urging residents never to hand their bank card to another person and never to enter their PIN into a payment terminal when they cannot verify who is operating the device.
