Whitby resident faces hate crime charges over anti-Muslim posts on social media

A 57-year-old Whitby man has been charged with inciting hatred and uttering threats after Durham Regional Police say their Hate Crime Unit concluded an investigation into his online activity, Toronto Sun Crime reports.

Sean Farro — known on social media under the name Sean Strife — was taken into custody Wednesday following what police described as the deliberate promotion of anti-Muslim hatred across multiple social media platforms.

"The suspect willfully incited violence and harm against the Muslim community on social media platforms under the name Sean Strife," Durham Regional Police stated in a release issued Wednesday.

Farro faces two charges: an offence motivated by hatred — uttering threats, and inciting hatred in a public place. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The meme in question

Police have not disclosed the specific posts that triggered the charges, but numerous references online point to a meme allegedly shared and subsequently deleted by Farro across various platforms.

The image features Canadian and American flags in its upper corners with the words "North American Zone" displayed between them. Below that, the meme reads: "Hunting permit for all species, types of: Muslim." It goes on to state "No Bagging Limit" and "No Tagging Required."

When sharing the meme, Farro reportedly commented: "I suggest everyone register now."

Social media user Ismail Aderonmu, who posts on X under the handle @LegalishCA, was among those who flagged the content, calling it "sick and twisted."

"A literal 'hunting permit' for Muslims with 'no bagging limit' and 'no tagging required,'" Aderonmu wrote. "An entire religious community depicted as prey. Apparently deleted now. Screenshots exist. This should be taken seriously."

Farro's online presence

Farro is an active figure across Facebook, TikTok and X, where he goes by @SeanStrife00 and describes himself as the "Lead singer of Social Strife! The Harbinger of Truth & Canadian patriot!" His videos frequently involve criticism of Muslims and Sharia law. He has also been associated with promoting Canada First rallies online.

In a post published Tuesday — the day before his arrest — Farro showed no indication of remorse over the meme.

"So the Muslims and the leftist mob want me to apologize for a meme that was shared 100,000 times at least before I re-shared it! I will not now nor will I ever bow to the mob! You put my address public and you're threatening to roll up on me, that only makes me wanna fight harder," he posted on X.

Police statement

Durham Regional Police used the occasion to reaffirm their position on hate-motivated conduct. "Any acts that target, intimidate, threaten or instill fear in any individual or group are unacceptable and will be thoroughly investigated," the service stated.
