According to Newsit.gr, the Larnaca Police Investigation Department (TAE) has begun taking statements as part of investigations into plasmapheresis machines found at a medical centre in the area. The investigation concerns two medical centres, one of which appears to have housed the specific machines.
The trigger for the investigations was provided on 14 September, with a letter from the Department of Medical Services to the Larnaca TAE. Following the letter, instructions were issued to conduct an investigation, in cooperation with the Department of Medical Services, as to whether the operation of the machines violates current legislation. Related meetings were held in previous days and an investigative team was established.
The case is being examined in combination with findings from an earlier investigation into the same medical centre, which had been initiated following a letter in 2023. At that time, the Ministry of Health had received two complaints regarding the same establishment and had proceeded to report the matter to the police. The Legal Service had judged at that time that, due to insufficient evidence, the case could not be substantiated.
Developments in Cyprus follow dramatic revelations surrounding the death of Giorgos Mazonakis in a flat-clinic in Kolonaki during a plasmapheresis session. In the wake of the tragedy, both the Pancyprian Medical Association and the Federation of Patient Associations of Cyprus are urging citizens to be particularly careful, to verify information and to consult their personal doctor before undergoing any treatment.
According to a report on kathimerini.com.cy on 18 September, the Cypriot Ministry of Health is beginning a "mapping" of clinics carrying out high-risk interventional therapies. The issue is expected to be discussed at the Health Committee within October, where inspections to be carried out at health centres, the licensing of healthcare professionals, as well as medical technology equipment will be examined.
