Defendant Admits to Murder of Student – Hearing on 6 October
The confessed perpetrator of the murder of 22-year-old student from Bangladesh, Shahruar Ahmed Emon, appeared today before the Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca and admitted to all three charges facing him, according to sigmalive.com. The next hearing was scheduled for 6 October.
The defendant faces premeditated murder, kidnapping of a person with intent to commit premeditated murder, and extortion of property with threats with intent to steal. The offences are alleged to have been committed in June in the Larnaca district.
According to evidence presented at a previous hearing, the defendant met the victim on 7 June whilst travelling on a bus. The two exchanged contact details and, according to claims attributed to the suspect, from that meeting he formed the impression that the student came from a wealthy family.
On 9 June, the suspect is alleged to have purchased a knife. Two days later he contacted Emon, claiming he had found a job offering 50 euros per day. On the evening of 11 June, the 22-year-old student travelled to the Kofinoi area to meet him.
The victim's body was found in an open area in Kofinoi, together with a knife that was seized as evidence. Forensic examination revealed three cuts in the scapular region and a cut in the left cervical region.
When the suspect was arrested, police found in his possession personal items belonging to the victim, including travel cards and a bank card bearing the name of the 22-year-old. Investigators are continuing to investigate the sequence of events that led to his death.
