Two health workers killed in ambulance attack in northern Manabí
A doctor and the driver of an institutional ambulance were murdered on the evening of Monday, 14 September on the Canoa-Jama road in northern Manabí, according to a report by eluniverso.com. The vehicle was intercepted by armed individuals near the Río Muchacho bridge, and both occupants died inside the unit.
The alert was received by ECU 911 at around 18:45. Units from the National Police attended the scene to secure it and collect evidence related to the crime.
Victims identified
The victims were identified as Jandry Alexander Calderón Cedeño, a doctor, and Sigifredo Nolger Zambrano Aveiga, the ambulance driver. Calderón worked as a rural doctor and had obtained his medical degree from Laica Eloy Alfaro University of Manabí (ULEAM).
According to preliminary information from authorities, both had transported an injured patient from a traffic accident to the Miguel H. Alcívar Hospital in Bahía de Caráquez, Sucre canton. It was during the return journey to Jama that the ambulance was intercepted and attacked.
Health Ministry condemnation
In a statement issued on 15 September, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) condemned the murder and expressed its solidarity with the victims' families and colleagues. The ministry confirmed that both workers were performing their duties at the time of the attack.
The MSP also stated that it would provide authorities with all necessary information and cooperation to help clarify the facts. It also announced that it would coordinate with responsible institutions to take protective measures for health and operational personnel working in the territory, and that it would support the families of the deceased.
No arrests or established motive
As of 15 September, no arrests had been publicly reported in connection with the attack, nor had the motive for the murder been officially established.
