Detention in Guayaquil following viral videos of assault on minor
The National Police detained the attacker of a 9-year-old girl and her mother in the Guasmo Sur sector of Guayaquil, according to vistazo.com. The arrest was made on the morning of Saturday, 12 September, one day after videos of the assault went viral on social media.
The images, released on Friday, 11 September, show the beatings and verbal abuse the man inflicted on the child. According to the commander of the National Police Zone 8 - DMG, General Walter Villarroel, the recordings were made by family members. Neighbours who witnessed the situation approached the residence to stop the assault, at which point the attacker fled the scene and went into hiding.
"Upon learning of this cowardly action, because it deserves no other name, involving assaults on a 9-year-old girl and her mother, the Police immediately activated its protocols to conduct an investigation," declared General Villarroel.
The institution immediately began searching for the perpetrator after the videos circulated. Interior Minister John Reimberg confirmed the detention on social media: "We've already caught this bastard. Excellent work National Police."
The attacker was placed at the disposal of the competent authorities following his detention. Villarroel indicated that both the girl and her mother—who had allegedly been victims of domestic violence on multiple occasions—are safe and receiving medical and psychological care.
