The National Police deployed a large-scale operation across six districts of Guayaquil with helicopter and drone support. Two people were detained in Portete district for assault and resistance.
Simultaneous police operation spans southern and northern Guayaquil
The National Police deployed a large-scale operation across six districts of Guayaquil on the afternoon of Sunday, 13 September, with support from an Aerial Police helicopter and drones, according to eluniverso.com. The actions initially concentrated on the Suburbio Battalion, within Portete district, and extended simultaneously to the South and Esteros districts, as well as Pascuales, Florida and Nueva Prosperina in the north of the city.
After 15:30, patrol cars and motorcycles entered several streets in the Batallón sector. While incursions were taking place on the ground, the helicopter maintained aerial surveillance of the area and drones monitored movements to detect unusual activities.
Walter Villarroel, commander of Police Zone 8, explained that the intervention sectors were selected based on citizen reports channelled through a QR code system, through which zones with the greatest problems of non-compliance with legal regulations were georeferenced.
The three police subsystems participated in the operation with differentiated functions. Units of the preventive branch carried out identity checks on citizens in public areas, whilst elite and intelligence units carried out raids on residences where it is presumed that drugs are stored or distributed, as well as other crimes.
"This is why we are here with police operations and bringing order to the streets," Villarroel stated.
On a preliminary basis, it was reported that two people were detained in Portete district for the crimes of assault and resistance. The commander indicated that consolidated results from all simultaneous operations were expected a few hours after the interventions concluded.
