A man was arrested in Guayaquil after a video went viral showing him attacking a 9-year-old girl. The Interior Minister confirmed his detention.
Detention in Guayaquil following video of assault on minor
A man was detained by the National Police in Guayaquil after a video showing him hitting, dragging and shouting at a 9-year-old girl circulated widely on social media on Saturday 12 September, according to teleamazonas.com.
The incident occurred on 11 September in the Guasmo Sur area. The images show the adult physically assaulting the child, who cries and calls for help, whilst a woman demands that he stop with the words: "ya déjala".
According to initial police investigations, the detained man would be the romantic partner of the girl's mother. The girl's mother would also have been a victim of abuse, according to information gathered by the National Police.
Following the video going viral, Interior Minister John Reimberg confirmed that officers had located and arrested the alleged perpetrator. The man was taken to a judicial facility, where his legal status will be determined through the corresponding procedure.
The Ministry of Labour and Human Development (MTDH) activated its technical teams for Special Protection in response to the case. The professionals made contact with the minor's family environment to assess her situation, provide psychological support and identify the needs of the girl and of the family currently responsible for her care.
