According to Iltalehti.fi's information, the 40-year-old man suspected of murder in Kuopio has previously been convicted of manslaughter – the incident occurred almost 20 years ago.
At that time, the then 21-year-old man took the life of an acquaintance together with one of his friends at the end of an alcohol-fuelled evening. The victim was beaten, kicked and strangled, and multiple objects were used in the violence, including a reading lamp, a fluorescent tube, a wine bottle and electrical cables. The assault lasted for hours and ended in the death of a man in his early forties.
"There appears to have been no deliberation in initiating the violence," the district court ruling states. The motive for the violence was never established.
The man was sentenced to nine years in prison and served half of it. After his release, according to Iltalehti, he has committed further, less serious crimes and currently has charges pending in the district court. The man, who later changed his surname, lives according to address records in Central Ostrobothnia, and tens of thousands of euros in debts have been pursued against him through debt collection without result.
Now the same man is again the subject of a murder investigation. The death of a 70-year-old Kuopio resident was discovered early on Saturday morning, 19 September. The Eastern Finland Police received a report of a homicide in a private flat and found the elderly victim dead.
Two people were taken into custody at the flat, and two others later. The North Savo District Court remanded the 40-year-old man in custody on probable grounds of suspicion of murder. Additionally, a 42-year-old woman was remanded in custody on the lighter ground of suspected involvement, which means police still have more evidence to gather. Police have not commented on the details of the case.
