Intimate partner violence between adults has increased sharply in East Uusimaa. In some units, the number of cases has doubled compared to the previous year.

Google News FI — Crime (fi) reported figures released by the East Uusimaa Police Department, according to which intimate partner violence between adults has increased significantly compared to the previous year. In some of the department's units, the number of cases has increased by as much as 100 per cent.
Police estimate that the growth is partly explained by refinements in classification practices: non-physical violence is also being recorded more systematically than before. According to police, however, the significant increase in case numbers cannot be explained solely by changes in statistical methods.
Police say they are able to respond quickly to the most serious cases. In minor individual cases, however, there are delays in initiating investigations.
– We are aiming to improve the current situation by allocating sufficient resources to the investigation of intimate partner violence between adults and, in addition, we are constantly reviewing our own processes so that investigations proceed without delay, says criminal investigator Krista Vallila.
According to Vallila, intimate partner violence can manifest as sexual, financial, digital or honour-related violence, harassment, abuse or neglect. Different forms of violence typically overlap with one another.
– Violence can be directed at a current or former partner, a dating partner, a child, a parent or another close person, Vallila states.
