203 criminal investigations opened into violence in out-of-school facilities in France
A year after the scandal began, 203 criminal investigations are underway into physical and sexual violence in out-of-school facilities. Families remain mobilised.
School return under tension: out-of-school facilities still at the heart of a vast scandal
The Paris prosecutors' office announced on Monday 31 August to Le Figaro that 203 criminal investigations are currently underway into suspected violence — including sexual violence — in out-of-school facilities and educational establishments. Among these cases, 143 concern nursery schools, 36 concern primary schools and 24 concern crèches. The suspects are, in the vast majority of cases, activity leaders. In some cases, several investigations target a single establishment.
According to Le Figaro, 47 other cases were dismissed. Over the first six months of 2026, 125 complaints and reports were recorded, averaging 21 per month. In July and August, 22 new reports were added to this tally.
Nearly a year after the scandal broke, families — direct or collateral victims — continue their fight, both in Paris and in the provinces. Trust in out-of-school care structures has not been restored, according to testimonies gathered by Le Figaro. The school return is thus taking place in a climate of persistent mistrust between parents and institutions responsible for childcare.
On 9 June, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire had spoken on this matter, marking the involvement of municipal authorities in managing the crisis.
