Jérôme Debeauvais was found guilty of a triple homicide on rue Maberly in Amiens. The verdict was delivered on Thursday evening: the competent court imposed a life sentence, with a minimum term of 22 years. It is the most severe punishment permitted under French law.
The relatives of the deceased expressed their disappointment as they left the courtroom. Some mentioned an effective sentence of 18 years, deducting the four years spent in pre-trial detention. This interpretation warrants clarification: the 22-year minimum term represents a period during which the prisoner cannot request any reduction in sentence, conditional release or temporary leave. It is not a guarantee of release at the end of that period.
The anger expressed by relatives was also directed at the judicial system as a whole, although the magistrates are applying the law as voted by Parliament.
