A 49-year-old British national was taken into police custody for attempted murder, reports lefigaro.fr on the basis of information communicated by the Nice prosecutor's office. The incident occurred during the night of Saturday to Sunday, around 00:30, at 43 bis avenue Georges Clemenceau, in the railway station district.

The suspect stabbed a woman in her sixties several times, and her life remains in danger. Before the arrival of police forces, a resident of the building restrained the alleged attacker. The link between the suspect and the victim has not been established at this stage of the investigation.

"The investigation has been entrusted to the criminal investigation unit of the local judicial police service in Nice and will make it possible to clarify the circumstances and context of the act," the Nice prosecutor's office states. Allegations of rape, mentioned in several press articles, cannot be confirmed at this stage, the public prosecutor's office also specifies.
