A 29-year-old motorist was apprehended on Tuesday 26 August in Paris after wounding a cyclist with a knife during a dispute that occurred in the 9th arrondissement, according to France Info. The Paris prosecutor's office opened an investigation on charges of attempted murder.
The incident took place around 13:30 on rue de Sèze. A collision between the two road users escalated into a verbal altercation. The cyclist then threw "punches at the driver through his vehicle's window", according to the prosecutor's statement. The motorist then drew a knife and struck his victim in the throat before fleeing.
Victim hospitalised as a matter of urgency, prognosis ultimately reassuring
The cyclist, aged 24, was transported to hospital as a matter of urgency owing to a "suspected carotid artery injury", the Paris prosecutor's office clarifies. The victim was nevertheless able to leave the hospital by late afternoon. His initial medical certificate stated "shallow wounds" and two days of total incapacity for work (ITT).
Apprehension the same day, investigation handed to the 1st DPJ
The driver was apprehended the same day at around 17:00, following the end of investigations conducted by investigators, according to the prosecutor. The case was handed to the 1st district of the judicial police (DPJ).
Political reactions: the Transport Minister and the Mayor of Paris speak out
The assault prompted swift reactions in political circles. Philippe Tabarot, Transport Minister, posted a message on X: "Such violence calls for a firm response. The road must remain a safe space for all its users, and in particular the most vulnerable."
For his part, Emmanuel Grégoire, Mayor of Paris, declared that he learned of this assault of "unbearable violence" with "horror and anger". He condemned "acts of violence against cyclists" which he considers "inadmissible" and which "still occur far too often".
