France: Patrick Bruel's custody extended for 24 hours on rape accusations
French singer Patrick Bruel, aged 67, remains in custody in Paris for an additional 24-hour period. The Nanterre public prosecutor's office announced the extension of his provisional detention, as accusations of sexual violence and harassment from several women are the subject of an investigation.
To date, the judicial investigation has identified 13 people presenting themselves as victims. The initial testimonies come from three women who report incidents that occurred in 1997, 2000 and 2001. Authorities are also examining other cases that were revealed during questioning.
Among the matters under examination is a rape complaint in Dinard, in south-west France, in 2012, filed by a woman who was 32 years old at the time. Bruel is also being summoned to provide explanations following an official complaint lodged with Belgian authorities after accusations of rape and sexual assault in 2010 in Brussels by a 40-year-old woman.
The renowned artist denies all accusations made against him. However, owing to the investigation to which he is subject, he has cancelled most of his summer tour, which was due to begin in mid-June.
