Emmanuel Grégoire, newly elected to lead Paris City Hall, disclosed concerning statistics on Tuesday during a visit to a school located in the north-west of the capital. Since the beginning of the calendar year, the city has suspended 132 professionals working in after-school care facilities. More than half of these disciplinary measures, precisely 52 cases, are motivated by allegations of deviant sexual or sexist behaviour.
This announcement is part of a series of revelations concerning inappropriate conduct among staff members supervising children outside school hours. Several individuals targeted by these accusations have been remanded in custody pending trial.
As early as April, the current city official had already presented an intervention programme budgeted at twenty million euros. The right-wing opposition had then judged this envelope insufficient, calling for double the amount to effectively address the problem.
During his visit, Grégoire also announced the establishment of an independent investigative body. Antoine Garapon, a magistrate specialising in child protection, will head it. He will have full freedom to examine the failings identified and propose solutions.
