A police officer has been sentenced to 9 months in prison and banned from holding posts involving public contact for 6 months, following a hearing in Bobigny. The case concerns violence inflicted on a young man in police custody.
On 29 November 2025, an officer assigned to reception at Villepinte police station was alerted by screams. She ran towards the cells and saw her colleague beating a detainee. Deeply distressed, she was subsequently interviewed by IGPN investigators.
The young complainant, an immigrant without legal residence status named Rayane, had been taken to the station following his arrest. The sergeant admits he slapped him but denies the other violence alleged against him. Other officers also made statements, one mentioning further incidents involving the same defendant, notably a woman who reportedly received a kick in her cell.
During the trial, the defendant apologised to the young man for the slap. However, the interpreter responsible for translation into Arabic was challenged by Rayane's circle, who considered that translation errors distorted the testimony.
The magistrate responsible for prosecution requested a sentence of 4 to 6 months suspended. The defence lawyers pleaded for maximum leniency, emphasising that the officer had admitted the facts and apologised. The judges ultimately imposed a sentence higher than requested.
The request for non-entry in the judicial record was rejected.
