The young man who was shot dead in the Exarcheia area has been identified. According to reporting by Reporter.gr, he was a 25-year-old Turkish national who had arrived in the country last November and had filed an application for the granting of asylum.
The young man had not previously come to the attention of the Greek prosecuting authorities in criminal matters. He had been brought in twice during random checks, once in Volos and once in the capital, but nothing was found against him.
The unknown perpetrator shot him multiple times with a nine-millimetre calibre weapon, hitting him in the head and face. Five cartridge cases were found at the scene. The perpetrator disappeared running towards the Strefi Hill area.
Officers of the Hellenic Police are investigating multiple possibilities regarding the motives for the attack. Authorities are examining whether the young man's death is connected to illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, as the violence of the attack suggests a settling of accounts. For now, however, there is no evidence linking the 25-year-old to criminal organisations.
Particularly brutal was the scene that police officers encountered at the location of the incident: next to the young man's lifeless body was his dog, which remained motionless beside him.
Police investigations are continuing with the taking of statements from those present and the collection of material from surveillance cameras, with the aim of locating the gunman. Information is also expected from Turkish authorities regarding the victim's background and history.
