Infant murder in Kypseli: Shocking statements and the 43-year-old's past

A boy approximately eight months old was found murdered and frozen inside a suitcase in a flat on Thassos Street in Kypseli. According to ERT, a forensic examination showed that the infant was mutilated with almost 20 knife wounds from a single knife, before being frozen and transferred to a suitcase.
At the centre of investigations are the results of laboratory examinations, including DNA analysis, as well as a forensic report that refutes the claims of the 43-year-old alleged father.
The 43-year-old's claims
The 43-year-old insists that the infant's death was due to pathological causes and denies any criminal responsibility. He even claimed that the wounds on the dead child's body were caused by his attempts to remove with a knife the crust of ice that had formed on the corpse during its time in the freezer. However, the forensic report explicitly states that the wounds are deep and inflicted from behind.
In his statement to police, he allegedly stated: "The baby was crying constantly and my wife was depressed. They switched it for us at the maternity hospital and gave us another one that was possessed and as soon as it died our house became calm". The claim about a "switched baby" is attributed solely to the 43-year-old himself and does not constitute an established fact.
The contradictions of the 38-year-old
The 38-year-old German woman, who is pregnant, stated from the outset that the baby was hers and that she gave birth to it in a hospital, but did not produce the corresponding documents. During the preliminary investigation, she gave police different versions of the same events.
In her latest statement, she claimed that she gave birth to the infant and that it died when it was approximately eight months old — a timeframe that matches the findings of the forensic report. She also stated: "One of my sons had stolen a mobile phone a year ago in Patissia. They took them to Paides "Agia Sophia" because there was no space at 'The Smile of the Child'. They stayed there for a week because they thought I was neglecting them. The girl is pregnant by an Afghan".
Six people in the flat — three minors with sexually transmitted disease
A total of six people lived in the Kypseli flat: the 43-year-old Greek national, the 38-year-old German woman, their 15-year-old daughter who is pregnant, the 26-year-old Afghan, and two younger boys. All three minors were diagnosed with sexually transmitted disease. Their statements are expected to shed light on the case, according to ERT.
The couple met through a mutual friend and are said to have had three children together who were found in the flat — a fact that is expected to be established by DNA examination.
The dark past of the 43-year-old
The 43-year-old is not appearing before the authorities for the first time. In April 2020 he had been brought before justice following a complaint by a German woman for a case of pimping.
The woman complained that she met him through social networks and travelled to Greece convinced that he had feelings for her. After her arrival, the man took away her travel documents, held her against her will in a flat in the centre and forced her into prostitution. "The way I would make money, as he told me, was to have sex with other men. I said I was not going to do such a thing and he became furious. He started beating me with fists and kicks all over my body, pulling me by the hair, tearing out tufts and started choking me with his hands around my neck", the woman testified.
Her ordeal ended when she managed to escape and notify the authorities. The 43-year-old was remanded in custody but was later released following a court order, as the woman withdrew her complaint.
In digital space, he used artificial intelligence tools to assign himself images of a boxer, a terrorist, a rapper, a video game character and a prisoner.
"The Smile of the Child": Report from 2020
The Smile of the Child organisation revealed that it had already received a report in 2020 concerning three children in Kypseli with complaints relating to neglect, substance use and abusive behaviour within the family. A new anonymous call followed in 2024. The organisation notes that the information now publicly disclosed presents similarities with the case, although it cannot be confirmed that this is the same family.
The 26-year-old Afghan, who according to witnesses allegedly beat the 15-year-old girl who lived in the flat, was already known to the authorities. He had previously been accused of drug trafficking and had been arrested.
