Syros: The unanswered questions about the murder of the 42-year-old rescuer
Devastated, the parents of 42-year-old Evangelia, a rescue worker with EKAB, remain as they grieve the loss of their daughter, who lost her life on Syros on the afternoon of 11 July. According to the newspaper Ta Nea, the motives behind the attack and the exact circumstances remain the subject of an investigation by the authorities.
"She murdered my child," says her father, expressing the belief that his daughter was trapped and killed so she would not reveal information she knew about the accused. He and his wife visit the cemetery every day, while their home, as they describe it, has sunk into silence. "These are all we have now, the photographs," adds the father.
Speaking to Live News, Evangelia's father and an uncle of the 42-year-old claim that Evangelia possessed information that could have created serious problems for the accused. Her uncle stated that his niece covered the features of her face before going to the accused's house, with the aim of causing him fear. "The reason she went was because she wanted to go like that. She wanted to cause him fear and get the warning across, that you should not go ahead," he stated characteristically.
According to her uncle, the 42-year-old decided to go there after learning that the accused had bothered someone from her close circle. He also believes that, in the few seconds she remained inside the house, Evangelia managed to direct a specific warning to him.
A critical question remains: what exactly happened in those seconds? Did the accused recognise Evangelia, or did he believe — as he has claimed from the outset — that it was a would-be robber?
Eyewitnesses who spoke to MEGA's programme stated that they heard voices after the disputed moments. One of them expressed doubt as to whether the act was premeditated, noting that he had known the accused since childhood.
The case is at the stage of full investigation. Court and police authorities continue to collect and evaluate evidence, whilst new witness statements are continually being included in the investigation. The questions about what preceded the attack and what the true motives were remain unanswered.
