On Friday evening, an 18-month-old girl died at the University General Hospital of Heraklion. Medical staff attempted to resuscitate her for forty-eight minutes without success.

According to Cretalive.gr, the small child was from the Roma community and had presented with health problems in the preceding days. She had visited a paediatrician, who had prescribed treatment for her.

Her condition deteriorated suddenly. Her grandfather, aged 45, who had taken care of her while her parents worked away from Crete, took her to the hospital.

Doctors found that the infant had signs of sepsis. Shortly afterwards she suffered cardiopulmonary arrest. Hospital staff immediately attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but were unable to save her.

On the prosecutor's order, the 45-year-old grandfather was taken into custody on suspicion of exposure. The aim is to determine the circumstances under which the tragedy occurred.

According to Politis.com.cy, citing police sources, doctors found no external signs suggesting abuse or negligence towards the child.
