The prosecutor recommended the conviction of the former MEP and the former general secretary for breach of confidentiality and personal data violations, whilst seeking the acquittal of two other defendants on the confidentiality breach charge.
Court recommendation for conviction in case of leaked emails of diaspora Greeks
The court is examining the case of the disclosure of electronic addresses of Greeks abroad, which took place before the European elections of 2024. The prosecutor handling the case recommended the conviction of two of the defendants.
Specifically, the judicial officer sought to have found guilty the former New Democracy MEP Anna Misél Asimakopoulou and the former general secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Michalis Stavrianoúdakis. The acts attributed to them are related to the placing of personal details of diaspora Greeks on the internet, as well as the failure to observe rules of confidentiality.
On the other hand, the same prosecutor recommended the acquittal of the former secretary of Diaspora Affairs of the ruling party, Níkos Theodórópoulos, and Ménios Koromiló, who held the position of organisational secretary at the time, regarding the offence of breach of confidentiality. Nevertheless, for the latter two she argued that they should be found guilty of violation of the law on the protection of personal data.
The final ruling of the court was expected to be handed down within the day.
