The hearing in the case of three-year-old Angelos from Crete began with tension. The lawyer for the 27-year-old mother presented a court ruling concerning her client's mental health.
According to efsyn.gr, the barrister submitted an argument regarding reduced capacity for understanding the defendant's actions. The ruling that was presented was recently issued by an Athens court and notes limited cognitive functions for clinical reasons.
Additionally, the defence sought to present visual material from experts, with images of the child before he moved permanently to the island. The lawyer argued that the boy bore no signs of abuse prior to this relocation.
The proceedings were temporarily suspended due to verbal tensions. The mother's representative maintained that the case had been handled carelessly, prompting a sharp reaction from the prosecutor's office. The latter stressed that the judicial authorities are working intensively to clarify the matter.
The lawyer for the 44-year-old partner commented that the opposing side is seeking mitigating factors. He requested that the medical examiner who examined the unfortunate child be called in order to provide explanations regarding the nature of the injuries.
A neighbour of the man testified as a witness, stating that she had no contact with him. She said she saw the mother for the first time a few days before the tragic incident. She described the 44-year-old as a person with an explosive temperament in certain cases.
The hearing will continue in mid-June with further witness testimony.
