Police officers discovered the body of a 45-year-old woman buried in a field belonging to a 43-year-old man in the Vatolakkos area of Chania. The corpse was bound with plastic ties, whilst her mouth had been sealed with multiple layers of insulating tape.

The property owner, a North Macedonian national, admitted to the act following an interrogation lasting several hours that began on Saturday morning. According to his statement, the incident occurred on 30 May inside the house where the woman was living as a tenant. As he claimed, a heated argument had preceded this, which began when she asked him to renew an old romantic relationship between them and he refused.

During the quarrel, as he stated in his confession, the woman hit him. He grabbed a beer bottle and struck her repeatedly until it broke. When the victim began screaming and calling for help, he sealed her mouth with tape. He then stabbed her twice near the heart, immobilised her with plastic ties, wrapped her body in bags and left it on the floor.

That same evening the perpetrator went to a restaurant and remained there for several hours. The next morning, he loaded the corpse into his small van, transported it approximately five kilometres away from the house where the crime took place and buried it in a hole that he himself had dug.

Initially, the 43-year-old attempted to cast suspicion on the victim's brother. However, officers from the Chania Crime Investigation and Detection Subdivision had already gathered evidence and were not deceived. During the interrogation, data were presented regarding transactions on the 45-year-old's bank accounts.

From the statement it emerged that the perpetrator had given the victim's cards to another foreign national, having stuck a label with the PIN code on them. This man made withdrawals from ATMs in the area for several days. The authorities do not believe he was involved in the murder. According to information, the 43-year-old had first made withdrawals himself and then gave the cards to his acquaintance, in an attempt to involve him and present the incident as a robbery.
