Murder of 45-year-old in Chania: Tenant confesses

A 43-year-old man has admitted to murdering his 45-year-old landlady in Chania, following an extensive search for the woman who had been reported missing since 30 May.

The suspect, who had been living as a tenant in the victim's home, changed his stance during the night and led police to the location where he had hidden the body. The corpse was found buried in a field belonging to him, at a distance of approximately five kilometres from the crime scene.

The perpetrator claimed that a violent argument led to the fatal act. However, the prosecuting authorities do not rule out other motives, including a possible sexual assault. Traces of blood were found inside the residence and in the suspect's vehicle, according to a specialist team.

The plot where the body was found has an area of 600-700 square metres and is located in a visible and accessible spot, a fact that raises questions for investigators. The 43-year-old had acquired the property six years ago, had planted olive trees and had placed containers there.

Significant contribution to clarifying the case came from data from mobile phone antenna records, which registered the last presence of the unfortunate woman at the accused's residence. The body was identified in the presence of her brother.

The suspect was brought before the prosecutor. The investigation continues, with officers awaiting conclusions from forensic analyses and examining the perpetrator's background as well as his relationship with the deceased.
