Police spokesperson Konstantia Demoglidou spoke about the horrific murder of a 45-year-old woman by a 43-year-old man in Chania, Crete. She emphasised that no circumstances could justify the specific act.
In statements to television station SKAI, Ms Demoglidou made clear that police investigation had not revealed any romantic relationship between Stavroula and the man who confessed to the murder. The main reason cited by the arrested man concerned disagreements relating to the property he was renting from the victim.
The 43-year-old described in detail to officers the manner in which he proceeded to the fatal attack. According to his confession, he began by hitting the woman on the head with a bottle. When she collapsed to the floor without completely losing consciousness, the perpetrator used a knife. Finally, he took a piece of wood that was lying nearby and completed the crime.
Before burying the unfortunate woman's body in agricultural land, the man took the bank cards and codes she had on her. After placing her in a rubbish bag, he made withdrawals of approximately one thousand euros from her accounts. His thinking was that this would make it appear she was still alive, avoiding suspicion about her disappearance.
Prosecutors are carefully investigating the suspect's smartphone, hoping that it will shed light on the real motives behind the murder. Meanwhile, conclusions from the forensic examination are expected so that the circumstances in which the crime was committed can be fully clarified.
Ms Demoglidou stressed that the perpetrator "did not stop until he completed his act and took her life". She added that the initial macroscopic findings show that more than one means was used. Regarding his past, she said he had concerned the authorities for various common criminal offences, although there was nothing equivalent in his criminal record.
When asked about the possible involvement of the suspect's wife, the police spokesperson replied that "she has given statements during the preliminary investigation", without providing further details.
