Murder in Chania: 43-year-old tenant confesses to murder of 45-year-old landlady
In Chania, Crete, a 43-year-old man from North Macedonia admitted that he murdered Stavroula Leventaki, 45, who had gone missing since the end of May. The woman's body was found buried in a rural area.
According to NewsIT, the suspect changed his account of his motives twice. Initially, he claimed he lost his temper following a quarrel about the condition of the rental property. Subsequently, he contended that the woman was pressuring him for sexual relations and was threatening to reveal this to his wife.
During the 21 days that elapsed between the crime and his arrest, the perpetrator attempted to mislead the prosecuting authorities. He allegedly directed suspicion towards the victim's brother, claiming that the two siblings had a poor relationship.
Of particular interest is the fact that whilst the unfortunate woman was already dead, transactions were recorded through her bank cards. Investigators are examining the possibility that the murderer himself or an accomplice used the cards in order to create the impression that Leventaki was alive and had left voluntarily.
The investigative team believes the 43-year-old struck the victim first in the head with a glass bottle. He then sealed her mouth with tape to prevent screaming. He fatally stabbed her in the chest. Subsequently, he wrapped the body in plastic bags, transported it in his work vehicle, and buried it in a field near another property where cannabis plants had been found.
The 45-year-old had installed a security camera system outside the property. The suspect had admitted that he frequently deleted footage from certain cameras. Nevertheless, a recording from 30 May survived which shows the woman entering the building but never exiting. This particular footage had been deleted by the perpetrator and was recovered through a special procedure.
The police officers handling the case had suspected the 43-year-old from the outset. Following multiple statements and intensive questioning, the perpetrator collapsed and confessed on Sunday. His confession was reportedly aided by the intervention of his wife, who asked him to speak if he knew anything.
The perpetrator's wife stated to NewsIT that she knew Stavroula but was completely unaware of their relationship. The 43-year-old now faces charges of wilful murder and is expected to be presented before the prosecutor within the day.
