The 43-year-old tenant from North Macedonia who lived in the home of 45-year-old Stavrula Leventaki in Chania admitted to killing the woman. Her body was found buried in agricultural land approximately five kilometres away from her residence. The crime is reported to have been committed on 30 May, according to what he himself told the prosecuting authorities.
Police officers managed within a short period of time to reconstruct the final movements of the unfortunate woman before she disappeared. Data from her mobile phone showed the accused's residence as the final destination. Specialists from the Criminal Investigation Service found traces of blood inside the house, on furniture and appliances, as well as in the 43-year-old's vehicle. These findings significantly strengthened the case against him.
In his statement, the perpetrator said that following an intense argument inside the house, he used a knife against her. He then transported the body with his vehicle approximately five kilometres away, to a plot of land measuring 600-700 square metres that he owns in the area. There he placed her inside bags and buried her in a pit. The location is easily visible, with residences around it.
Authorities had reached the area by Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, the 43-year-old pointed out to police the exact location. Stavrula's brother, who was present there, watched in a state of shock as the body was recovered.
Before his arrest, the accused had appeared on a television programme attempting to mislead the investigations. Before the cameras he claimed he wished to help, while simultaneously trying to direct suspicion towards the victim's brother, saying their relationship was poor and that he had thrown her out of the house. "Everyone knows she is crazy," he had initially said about Stavrula.
He himself claimed that he maintained friendly relations with the victim, that they drank beer together, and that he had invited her on many occasions with company. Furthermore, he had given a false date for their meeting, claiming they met on 29 May rather than 30 May, as the prosecuting authorities believed.
The 43-year-old maintains that the motive was disagreements related to the property. Investigators, however, do not rule out the possibility that the motive was sexual. The investigation continues in depth, with authorities gathering information about the perpetrator's history and the nature of his relationship with the woman.
