A 45-year-old woman was found dead in the wider Chania area with her limbs bound and tape over her mouth, according to reports by ERT Chania via Athina 9.84. The victim was Stavrula Leventaki. An autopsy is expected to be completed shortly, after which a warrant for the arrest of a 43-year-old man will be issued.
The suspect, who is from North Macedonia and was renting the house, is reported to have admitted his guilt during the night into Sunday. According to his account, he had an acute dispute with the woman over matters related to the residence, a fact which led to tragic escalation.
He is reported to have attacked the 45-year-old woman with a blade. After killing her, he placed the body in a bag and transported it by van-type vehicle to an estate belonging to him, where he buried it. On Saturday night he led police officers to the location where he had hidden the victim.
Material from the house's closed-circuit surveillance system played a significant role in clarifying the case. The audiovisual material showed the woman entering the building, but it never recorded her leaving it. The 43-year-old had attempted to delete the file, but the authorities managed to recover it and use it in the investigation.
Greek Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidu confirmed that the perpetrator had deleted the material and that special processing was required to recover it. She made clear that the suspect's previous non-detention was part of the prosecution authorities' tactics, aimed at gathering more evidence against him.
Investigations are now focusing on why the crime was committed, on the perpetrator's movements in the days prior, and on his background, which is being examined thoroughly. The choice of burial site is striking: it is a location easily visible and accessible, near houses and farmland.
