Minor extortion and gold theft in Porto Rafti: 16-year-old in police custody
On the afternoon of 12 June, police officers from the Organised Crime Division of Markopoulo-Mesogeia conducted an arrest in the Porto Rafti area. A 16-year-old from Albania fell into their hands, who is accused of participating in an extortion ring targeting minors.
His mother was also arrested, accused of failing to exercise the necessary supervision of her child.
The case concerns a 14-year-old from Ukraine, whom the 16-year-old together with two other peers – a Greek and a fellow Albanian – forced through threats of physical injury to hand over gold items from the victim's family. The pieces were sold illegally to gold dealers.
The incident occurred during May. Authorities estimate that the value of the stolen items amounts to approximately €10,000.
The two accomplices of the arrested youth have already been identified and investigations to locate them are ongoing.
During a search conducted at the 16-year-old's residence, police officers found and seized five flares, a flare launcher device, as well as brass knuckles. The minor was brought before the prosecuting authorities.
